https://note.com/waterwaves/n/n956ededad238 Donald Judd's “Specific Objects” is an essay he published in 1965 and the artistic concept proposed in it. It refers to clearly defined three-dimensional objects that directly engage particular materials and spaces, belonging to neither conventional “painting” nor “sculpture.” Main characteristics of Specific Objects: Escape from categories: Completely rejecting traditional notions of painting (canvas and frame) and sculpture (figurative or abstract objects placed on pedestals). Introduction of industrial materials: Employing industrial and ready-made materials such as aluminum, iron (Cor-Ten steel), Plexiglas, and plywood. Geometric composition: Using simple geometric forms such as boxes and pipes, excluding the artist's emotions and brushwork (matière). Engagement with space: Emphasizing the work's presence by integrating it with its location (walls, floors, etc.) rather than treating it as a standalone work. Significance and influence: This concept became a theoretical pillar of the minimalism (minimal art) emerging in America. Judd presented artworks as autonomous “real objects” in themselves, rather than things that produce “illusions (deceptions or fictions).”
