A quasicrystal is a structure without the strict, perfect periodicity prescribed by classical crystallography but with comparable long-range order. This discovery forced a reassessment of crystallography established in the 19th century, and in 1992 the International Union of Crystallography changed its definition of a crystal to the looser “a substance displaying a discrete diffraction pattern.” https://scrapbox.io/files/64a55e1b0c15f4001bcbde1e.png
