Something in a steady state despite being out of equilibrium. In other words, something whose form does not change despite flow. Examples of dissipative structures, besides gas-stove flames, include vortices at changes of ocean tides, typhoons, and living organisms. Prigogine also recognized living organisms as examples of dissipative structures and considered them in various ways.
