The 3:3:2 mode was strongest among dancers in the village of Sagere, Mali (Figs. 5b and 7e). Recording a representative corpus of their musical repertoire revealed that 46% of the excerpts recorded in the corpus contained a prominent 3:3:2 pattern (see “Methods” for details). Similarly, strong weights for 3:3:2 were found in all other groups of musicians and dancers from African and Afro-diasporic traditions (musicians in Botswana, Mali, Uruguay, and Brazil, and jazz musicians in both the US and UK). Fig. 7f, significantly higher.
