Another feature of the data shared across cultures is that response distributions tend to be symmetric across cyclic permutations (Fig. 3). For example, the modes at 1:1:2, 1:2:1, and 2:1:1 are roughly equally prominent within a given participant group. However, there was reason to expect that the most frequent permutations would be those in which the long interval occurs last43,44,45. This is because, when this configuration is played cyclically, the long interval provides a gap that helps group the pattern according to Gestalt principles43. Comparing the frequency of each cyclic permutation in each participant group, we indeed found a consistent tendency in this direction. Permutations with a long interval last occurred more frequently in 31 of the 39 groups (Extended Data Fig. 3). Likewise, in 33 of the 39 groups, participants made their first tap immediately after the long interval. This suggests that most participants in most groups tend to hear this onset as the “beginning” of the pattern.
