He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980 and a doctorate in mathematics from Harvard University in 1986. From 1985 to 1987, he researched computer music at the MIT Media Lab, then became a researcher at the French Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM). In 1988, drawing on research begun at the MIT lab, he developed Patcher, a control interface for the 4X, at IRCAM. He also ported it to Macintosh computers as personal research, and it was commercially released by Opcode under the name “Max” in 1990. Meanwhile, in 1989, as a researcher on IRCAM's “Musical Workstation” team, he developed Max/FTS for NeXT and the Ircam Signal Processing Workstation. From 1994, he became a faculty member and researcher in the music department at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and developed the freeware Pure Data in 1996. He currently serves as associate director of the university's Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA).
