Hexis is a Greek concept meaning “possession,” “state,” or “quality.” In Aristotle's ethics, it is an important term referring to virtues (dispositions, habits) acquired through repetition. It represents an “established state of mind and body” underlying actions, rather than a merely temporary condition. Established virtue and disposition: In Aristotelian ethics, a state in which good actions (virtue) are established as a person's character rather than temporary. “Having” or “state”: derives from Greek “echein” (to have) and means the state of possessing a certain quality. Habit: also the etymological source of “habitus,” a disposition acquired through repeated action. Related Phronesis (prudence): hexis (the disposition of desire) agrees with standards of appropriate action based on logos (reason). Habitus: Bodily tendencies socially internalized, a term used in sociology (Bourdieu).
