The phenomenon of emitting electrons by shining light on metal atoms is called Einstein's photoelectric effect. Analyzing this phenomenon, Einstein proposed in 1905 that light has both particle and wave characteristics. His paper is also thought to have laid the foundation for later quantum physics.
