After 2 years at the University of Florence, graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1964. After working under Franco Albini, founded Studio Piano in 1965. In the late 1960s, collaborated with Louis I. Kahn on the design of the Olivetti-Underwood factory. From 1970 to 1977, jointly directed the architectural practice “Piano & Rogers” with Richard Rogers. They jointly developed the design for the Centre Pompidou, won through an architectural competition1. From 1977 to 1980, jointly directed Piano & Rice & Associates with structural engineer Peter Rice. In 1981, established Renzo Piano Building Workshop in his hometown of Genoa. Major works would include the Centre Pompidou, which shocked the international scene; the passenger terminal design for Kansai International Airport, the greatest achievement in engineering and structural design in 20th-century architecture; and the Daimler City master plan for the redevelopment of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. All respond to the technical challenges demanded by enormous buildings while also considering such matters as an international airport's symbolism and the surrounding historical context in Berlin.
