Commodore BASIC (also called PET BASIC or CBM-BASIC) is a dialect of the BASIC programming language used in Commodore International's 8-bit home-computer product range, widely used from the PET (1977) through the Commodore 128 (1985). The core is based on 6502 Microsoft BASIC, and thus shares many features with other 6502 BASICs of the time, such as Applesoft BASIC. Commodore licensed BASIC from Microsoft in 1977 on a “one payment, no royalties” basis. This was because Jack Tramiel rejected Bill Gates’s offer of a fee of 3 dollars per 1 machine, saying “I’m already married,” and refused to pay more than 25,000 dollars for a perpetual license.1 The original PET version closely resembled the original Microsoft version, with only minor changes. The same applied to BASIC 2.0 for the C64, also found on the C128 (in C64 mode) and other models. Later PETs included BASIC 4.0, similar to the original version but with several added commands for operating floppy disks.
