Carsten Nicolai continually pursues cutting-edge activities in visual and sound art and also works as a musician under the name Alva Noto. Marko Peljhan is an activist involved in projects related to art and technology around the world and known for the polar mobile laboratory project “Makrolab,” focusing on telecommunications and weather-observation systems. The long-awaited new work “polarm,” the first collaboration in 10 years between these 2 independently active artists, has finally been unveiled. In this project focusing on the presence of “radiation,” the properties of radiation and electromagnetic waves on Earth are observed through various devices in the space, converted into light and sound, and further expressed through video and audio. Another “environment = <environment as an unknown polar region>,” ordinarily imperceptible and seemingly situated between the Earth's environment and the information environment, between real space and information space, becomes manifest. To mark the unveiling of the long-awaited new work, a symposium and live performance were held at the opening. Alongside the artists, participants included the “polar” project’s curators Kazunao Abe (YCAM) and Yukiko Shikata, and guest Andreas Broeckmann, a Berlin-based art historian and curator who, following V2 (Rotterdam) and TESLA, directed “ISEA2010RHUR” and is currently director of Dortmunder U (Dortmund).
